Control Consumable Spending
Learning to control and maintain business costs is vital to the success of any small business. Keeping these costs low can mean an increased profitability margin. There are a variety of budgeting methods you’re able to use to help keep your costs down, but one of the most overlooked costs in many business relates to the administrative supplies. These can include till rolls, ink ribbons and similar items that can add up to more than you expect if you don’t monitor consumable spending of smaller items.
Any business that offers goods and services to the public will require tills rolls. These items are used daily and are consumed quickly, which means replacing them on a regular basis can be a hidden cost that adds up quickly without you even noticing. If you’re in a situation where cutting your business expenditure costs can mean the difference in staying profitable, then start looking at the costs of some of these smaller consumable items.
First, choose a competitively priced supplier. Remember that supplier pricing may not be consistent across all product lines. In practical terms, this means you should comparison shop for companies that offer competitive pricing on the types of till rolls that you use most frequently. Company A might offer a better deal on single-ply till rolls, whereas Company B might have more competitive pricing on double-ply till rolls. Choosing a supplier that offers the best pricing on the products you use most frequently will maximize your savings.
In addition to choosing a reasonably priced supplier, you’ll want to compare the cost of different types of till rolls. The least expensive option is economy paper single-ply till rolls. Grade A paper is brighter than the standard off-white economy paper, but isn’t necessarily more expensive. This is the best option if you don’t require carbon copies of printed receipts.
In many cases, a register can also print duplicates. However, if you require more than one copy of each transaction receipt (one for your records, and one for the customer, for example), you’ll want to compare the cost of printing a duplicate receipt on single-ply till roll paper, to using multi-ply paper. Multi-ply paper, most often double or triple ply, also saves money by saving time and conserving the printer ink ribbon. It’s up to you to compare costs and decide whether single or multi-ply till roll paper is best for your needs.
You may require a thermal till roll, which is the type used in most chip and pin machines. Other businesses may require impact action paper rolls. These are carbonless paper that might seem a little more expensive initially, but when you consider that you won’t be buying ink printing ribbons they can end up saving you money in the long run.
By comparing all your available options and working through your list of consumable items properly, you can actively help reduce the costs incurred by your business which may in turn increase the profitability of your business overall.
