List Building – Beginner Friendly Tips to Kick Start Your List

One of the most popular phrases you will hear in the Internet Marketing Industry is “The money is in the list”. I am going to explain in this article exactly what list building is and how important it is to a home/online business.

A list is a collection of people and their details (normally email addresses and first name) who are interested in your product/home business opportunity. These people have given you their details in order for something; usually a free report or further information. An important thing to consider with list building is that you want a targeted list; it is no use in having a list of 100,000 people that aren’t likely to be interested in your product; a list of 1,000 targeted people is a lot more beneficial.

Make it clear to people visiting your website exactly what your product is. Do this by including keywords that relate to your business/product in your domain name. For example I am involved with Internet Marketing and am a Mentor so my domain name contains both the keywords “Marketing” and “Mentor”. This lets everybody who views my site know exactly what product/business opportunity I am involved with. Make sure you do the same or you will not be getting targeted traffic which will result in poor and not very profitable list building.

After you have made it clear what product you are promoting/selling with a keword loaded domain name make sure you give detail on exactly what niche within your industry you are involved with. This is done by creating a squeeze page; this is where you give the viewer an offer to receive something beneficial relating to your niche (eg free internet marketing report) in return for their details (email address and first name are the best; anymore and the viewer might be reluctant to part with that information).

Bullet point out the offer to make it stand out to the viewer; people don’t want to have to read a long chunk of text to find out what the offers/benefits are so make it clear for them. Also I recommend shooting a video where you explain the benefits; this is good for two reasons. Reason 1 is because you come across as a leader and people will look up to you; reason 2 is people will relate to you and know you’re not a spamming robot; it’s the next best thing to being face to face with the viewer.

Now you have a good squeeze page and domain name you need to drive targeted traffic to your squeeze page. There are many marketing methods on how to do this, for this article I am going to briefly talk about free marketing techniques as they are of most benefit to Internet Marketing newbies for the obvious reason they are free .

I recommend starting with Social Networking as you can position yourself as a leader and build your own brand (YOU) within your industry. The two social networking sites I would use are Facebook and Twitter as they are the most commonly used. After you set up an account you want to add targeted people.

For example I look for people in real estate as the housing market has been hit hard recently by the economic recession so more and more people who had real estate jobs are looking for other ways to make money as their jobs are not guaranteed, this is why they are likely to be interested in my home business opportunity.

To find these people I simply type “Real Estate” on Facebook and Twitter and it bringe me a list of people that have that word appear on their profile so they most likely work in Real Estate. Add them and when they accept introduce yourself, briefly let them know who you are and what product/home business you are involved with. Then ask to hear more from that person; list building is all about building relationships so show an interest in them as well.

Now you should get the picture of how List Building works; mainly let people know exactly what niche you’re involved with to filter out the people who will be interested in your product and get rid of the people that will not. Then get their details (through a squeeze page) and market to them whilst building a relationsship. Building relationships with people will result in profitable list building.
