The Positive And Negative Aspects Of Carbon Trading
Due to rising concern over global warming because of greater carbon emissions in the air, governments and other agencies have been trying to find effective solutions to the issue of pollution. Carbon offset and carbon credits trading are some of the mechanisms that are being adopted for dealing with this problem.
In carbon trading, carbon credits are purchased and sold in the market by businesses. These credits determine the amount of greenhouse gases that companies can emit above their allocated quota without paying a penalty.
Carbon trading motivates organizations to control their emission levels by providing economic incentives for doing so. The system wants companies to realize that the cost of adopting eco-friendly methods of doing business is lesser than the cost of carbon credits. If the firm is made to bear the costs of damage to the environment then it will use practices that are eco friendly to score over its rivals. With the number of businesses that adhere to this system increasing, the quantity of total emissions by countries will reduce, thus making the environment cleaner.
Another significant advantage of carbon trading is that it works on an open market system where any company can purchase or sell carbon credits. This method does not include any government interference such as collection of fines or framing local regulations, which increases its efficiency.
The biggest disadvantage of carbon trading is absence of a comprehensive worldwide framework for trading. As the transactions are carried out on a global scale largely, it becomes tough for a regional company to engage in the system on a regular basis.
Some companies are hesitant to become a part of this method because they do not want costs that they cannot add to the market price of their items. Further, numerous small organizations are not capable of affording the expenditure on buying the technology or implementing sophisticated techniques that would reduce their emissions. Thus, they are stuck in a situation where they have to continue paying for carbon credits year after year, which implies that they can’t stand up to larger organizations in the long run.
