Replacing an electrical outlet with a new one is a simple to follow procedure that requires moderate logic and expertise. Make sure that all the safety precautions are kept in tact though.

Before you start working on the concerned outlet make sure that the main power supply is cut off. In order to do so, switch off the circuit breaker switches from the breaker box or remove the main electrical fuse. Move to the outlet site to confirm the absence of current from the outlet plug. Use a voltage tester to test the outlet for current or voltage. Insert the two probes of the tester into the plug keeping an eye on the neon bulb at the tail of the tester. If the bulb glows then recheck the breaker switches and the fuse. Retest the outlet after the breaker box checkup. Alternatively a pen tester can be utilized to do the same job.

After ensuring that there is no current in the outlet, unscrew the cover plate with the help of tools such as pliers and screwdrivers. Pull out the outlet a few inches from the wall and place the screws in a convenient location so that they are located easily once the new outlet is ready to be screwed on to the wall.

Take a color pen or a tape roll to mark down the wiring fixtures as discovered on the outlet board such that it helps you with connecting wires again during the new socket’s installation. The indications must be clear enough such that no uncertainty arises later.

Remove the outlet completely out of the wall and take it to a local electrical shop to buy another one with the same functionality. Now with the old one available to you as a guide, install the new socket. Attach the wires to the respective terminals and screw them tightly. Put the cover plate on and screw it tightly as well.

Switch on the power supply to manipulate the success of the project.. An appliance can also be attached to the outlet to check how if it is working normally.

Remember that the electrical outlet has to be replaced only in case of a burned out or a damaged outlet terminal and not otherwise.
